“Don’t start a sentence with a conjunction!”
I can remember hearing that rule repeated over and over again during my elementary school grammar lessons.
As an adult, I remember hearing it again when my students rattled off that rule in my therapy room while we were working on complex sentences.
But there’s only one problem: That rule isn’t true.
Or at least, it’s only partially true. And while it’s great to give our kids catchy saying and phrases to help them remember things…they’re only helpful if they’re actually correct.
If you have kids who have language processing difficulties, they deserve to know the truth. They NEED to know how language works; especially when it comes to words like conjunctions that form complex sentences.
Since poor comprehension of complex sentences is behind so many processing issues, we have to give our kids the whole story.
In this video, I talk about why we shouldn’t subscribe to the “Don’t start a sentence with a conjunction” rule, and I share what you should be teaching them instead.

On a different note, in April 2018, Bob Dorough passed away at age 94. Dorough was a skilled jazz musician, but most people know him as the creator of “School House Rock”. Since we’re talking about conjunctions today, a tribute was in order. Here’s one of the most popular songs, “Conjunction Junction”:
