A lot of kids with language processing issues struggle to answer “wh” questions. It can be a challenge to figure out how to help.
The problem is that most “wh” question activities just focus on asking kids questions over and over again without teaching them the skills that are causing the breakdown in the first place.
Most people don’t realize that high-level “processing” issues are caused because kids don’t have a solid understanding of language at the word and sentence level.
In other words, if you can’t comprehend individual words and sentences, you aren’t going to be able to comprehend entire paragraphs or follow multi-step directions.
Additionally, when people ask you even the simplest questions…you might have the answer in your head…
But you might not know how to formulate your answer with a coherent sentence.
As a result, you might NOT be able to give a correct answer that’s relevant and that makes sense!
That’s exactly what’s going on in kids with language processing issues as you drill “wh” questions.
The good news is that it’s possible to help kids understand how to answer questions functionally so that they can succeed at school, work, and in social situations.
The key is NOT buying another set of “wh” question flashcards or worksheets.
Instead, the solution lies in teaching kids the SYNTAX they need to understand and answer these questions…
And most importantly, do it in a way that’s going to help them improve processing in realistic situations.
I just recorded the video below to I explain one of the most important skills you can teach kids who struggle to process “wh” questions.
In the video I share:
✅Common reasons why kids with language processing issues might give incomplete, off-topic, or incorrect answers to questions.
✅Why kids with language disorders often don’t respond to comprehension strategy instruction.
✅Why kids often give incorrect answers to “why” questions, plus the essential syntax skill you can teach them to improve their ability to process and express themselves.
