Every so often, people ask me for some social scripts for students with ASD and related diagnoses (pre-made, from worksheets or flashcards).
The truth is, as much as I appreciate what people are trying to accomplish with social narratives worksheets and printouts…
It would feel disingenuous to offer them because I rarely used them…nor do I recommend relying on them.
I share why in this video:
I used to stock up on “flashcards” and pre-made social scripts to target social skills…
But I found that no matter how many tools or materials I collected, they never really met my students needs.
I still remember having my sessions perfectly planned out with pre-made materials…
But having to change tweak and change them because they were so contrived that my students couldn’t relate to them.
OR my students would come in stressed about something that happened earlier that day, and I’d end up creating another narrative or script on-the-fly to address the immediate concern.
Over time, I realized I was creating stories from scratch more often than not.
So finally, I stopped trying to find the perfect set of script or pre-made worksheets/flashcards/materials and instead learned a better system for writing high-quality scripts on-the-fly.
I show you how to implement strategies like this quickly and effectively in The Social Language Roadmap.
In the Social Language Roadmap program, I provide a set of evidence-based pragmatic language interventions for high-functioning individuals so they can develop the social skills they need for academic, vocational, and social settings.
You can get complementary access to the Social Language Roadmap when you join SLP Learning Academy.
In the program I walk you through how to:
✅Stop using behavior charts and other reinforcement strategies that don’t motivate students.
✅Stop doing contrived exercises that don’t result in generalization.
✅Learn why most “social skills interventions” fall short, and what to do instead.
✅Learn exactly how to choose the right strategy to meet your students social language needs.
✅Start focusing your therapy on the social-pragmatic skills your students need to thrive, so they can reach their full potential in life.
For a limited time, you can get the Social Language Roadmap when you join SLP Learning Academy (my monthly membership that helps pediatric SLPs provide high-quality, life-changing services and find more fulfillment in their work).
