What do you do when you inherit an IEP from another SLP and you aren’t sure if the goals are appropriate?
What happens if you decide to shift the focus of your language therapy before the IEP is due?
These questions have come up in our member’s FB group for Language Therapy Advance Foundations, as well as the free Effective Language Therapy for SLPs online discussion group.
That’s why I wanted to take a few minutes and talk about it on a Q & A session.
These discussions come up a lot as I teach SLPs our 5 component language therapy system.
The reason is because when many SLPs start working with us, they worry that they’ll have to completely re-write all the goals for all their language cases just because they’re shifting their intervention focus.
They also worry about evaluations, data collection, and staying aligned with the curriculum; and how that’s all going to be impacted if they develop a completely new system for language intervention.
In the video Q & A below, I put those fears to rest.
I also share why you don’t have to re-write all your language goals, even if you are trying a whole new set of therapy techniques and strategies.
The applies if you get an inherited IEP with funky goals (but you know language processing is an issue), and it also applies if YOU wrote an IEP but are not realizing you need to shift your focus.
I also share why changing the strategies you use to build language skills don’t necessarily change the way you write goals all that much.
They also don’t change the evaluation protocols you’re currently using.
In other words, when you watch the video below, you’ll learn you don’t have to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
You’re probably doing A LOT of things right when it comes to language therapy! That means you the key to success is figuring out which practices to keep, which to ditch, and which to tweak.
Check out the video Q & A to learn how to shift your thinking when it comes to language evaluations, goals and data collection.
If you’re ever wanted to pull your hair out as you work through ANY of those things, you’ll get a lot of clarity 😊

This FREE online training reveals…
- The five essential ingredients every effective language therapy protocol must have (that aren’t being taught in most classrooms)
- How targeting these five specific skills can dramatically increase the language skills students need to succeed in school and life (like grammar, comprehension, and oral & written expression)
- The single most impactful skill that gets to the root cause of language processing issues (working on this ONE area makes it possible to target fewer skills, but get better results!)
- How to eliminate “time-wasters” from your sessions, so you can prioritize skills that make a true impact on student performance
- Why most students don’t make progress with goals focused on “following directions”, “wh” questions, and “comprehension strategies”(plus what to do instead)
